What is Sustainable branded clothing?

Updated: Aug 7, 2023

Clothing produced by brands and manufactures that prioritise environmental and social responsibility throughout their supply chain can be considered as sustainable clothing.

These brands focus on reducing their ecological footprint, promoting fair labour practices, and using environmentally friendly materials and production methods. Sustainable branded clothing used for promotion and workwear such as Cottover and Neutral aim to minimize the negative impact of the clothing industry on the planet and its people while still offering fashionable and high-quality products.

Here are some common practices and characteristics of sustainable branded clothing:

Eco-friendly materials: Sustainable brands often use organic, recycled, or upcycled materials for their clothing. This reduces the demand for new resources and minimizes waste.

Ethical manufacturing: Brands may work with factories that provide fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect human rights. Ethical manufacturing ensures the well-being of the workers involved in the production process.

Transparency: Sustainable brands are transparent about their practices and supply chain, allowing consumers to make informed choices about the products they purchase.

Slow fashion: Instead of encouraging fast-paced, disposable fashion trends, sustainable brands focus on creating timeless and durable pieces that have a longer lifespan.

Circular economy: Brands may adopt circular practices, such as offering repair services or take-back programs to recycle or repurpose old clothing.

Conscious packaging: Sustainable brands strive to use minimal and eco-friendly packaging materials to reduce waste.

Consumers who want to support sustainable branded clothing can look for certifications, read up on a brand's sustainability initiatives, and consider the overall environmental and social impact of their clothing choices. Making mindful and sustainable purchases can contribute to a more eco-friendly and ethical clothing and fashion industry.

Certifications: Sustainable brands obtain certifications like Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Fair Trade, or OEKO- Tex to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable practices.

GOTS is an international standard for clothes and textile. GOTS products always contain organic cotton and recycled polyester. GOTS sets high standards regarding fabric, quality, environment and social responsibility. Apart from this, GOTS also guarantees full traceability throughout the production chain.

The official EU label for Greener Products. Ecolabelled products have a comparatively modest impact on air, water, soil, quality, natural resource consumption, global warming and biodiversity. Products must pass rigorous environmental fitness tests, with results verified by an independent body. The label adorns top performing products only.

The Fairtrade certification mark is an international standard which certifies the cotton in garments. Through the certification, the farmers are guaranteed a Fairtrade minimum price to cover the cost for a sustainable production.

Renewable energy powers the Neutral® production. That way, making Neutral® clothing contributes to cleaner environments and fights climate change. In times of surplus, energy not needed for production is directed to local networks.

SA8000 is based on the principles of international human rights norms. It measures the performance of companies in eight key areas: child labour, forced labour, health and safety, free association and collective bargaining, discrimination, disciplinary practices, working hours and compensation.

The Oeko-Tex Standards 100 comprehensively addresses the human ecology component of textiles products. It screens for any harmful substances present within processed textiles, which are intended to come in contact with consumers.
